To Our Families & Students,

In the advent of the Black Lives Matter movement and the protests against systemic racism in our country and across the world, the I.S. 5 school community understands the urgency of conversations at home about race and bias. These conversations can be emotional, upsetting, difficult, and full of thoughtful, big questions– and may need guidance and resources to navigate. We share supports in the links below to help those important family conversations. It is our deepest hope that conversations bring further understanding and serve as a renewed call to “Live Like Leaders” to dismantle racism, stop deep, pervasive inequities and violence., and “Be the change.”

We encourage you to talk to your child about our BeTheChange@IS5 (Email submissions to BeTheChange@IS5q.org initiative, where we are welcoming students to express their perspectives, emotions and leadership by lifting their voices through art, writing, poetry and videos. We will be publishing our school’s submissions on 6/16/2020

We have begun our conversations. We say “No more.” We stand with you and side by side in making change happen and bring hope to a better tomorrow for our students and each other.

Yours In Gratitude & In Leading the Change,

Mrs. Nepogoda
