Principal’s Corner, Happy November!

It is a wonder that we are in our third month of the school year with holidays on the horizon! As quickly as we returned, we are only completing our first marking period and distributing report cards on November 14. This is an important time to bring our focus to supporting our students so they achieve their wildly important academic goals. Here are a few helpful hints to guide us to success:- PupilPath is a terrific tool to keep informed off your child’s progress and assignments in all of their classes. You can also use PupilPath to contact your child’s teachers with questions, concerns or words of celebration/gratitude. We love good news from your end, too!- Talk to your child about their school day. Simply asking and accepting the response “it was good” ends this talk. Engage in a conversation. Ask your child to be specific about what was good and what was challenging. Ask your child how they were a leader during their school day. Ask your child how they will do better and be their best self in the days and months to come.- We will be creating a school goal to have the majority of our students engage in student led conferences. Student led conferences require that your child come to conferences prepared to speak about their work, their growth and their needs about next steps. Student led conferences has your child responsible for their progress – and will make them feel empowered. By having conversations at home, students will feel more prepared and reflective. In order to see an example of a student led conference at a NYC DOE middle school, please visit the link below:

Parent engagement Tuesdays from 2:20-3:00 is a great time – but our doors are always open to you. This is our collective community and we could never succeed without you or your voice.

– Thank you for filling out the parent survey at the first opening school night! We had over 3,000 parents and family members come to our Parent Teacher Conferences – and we look forward to seeing your feedback. Our very own student government will be tallying and reading to bring your feedback and next steps to life!
I look forward to a fabulous second marking period, and a continued school year that celebrates the beauty of our IS 5 culture and community.

Sincerely,

Kelly Nepogoda, Principal

NYC Schools Accounts
On October 27th, we had our first Parent Teacher Conferences for our school year and we have three more conferences schedule to come. Children had received their progress reports a week earlier therefore most of their parents had an idea how their children were doing, however other parents wanted to know how to help their children to do better in school because the grade reflected in the progress report was not what they had expected.

If you missed the conference or if you did not have enough time to get all of your questions answered, you can call and make an appointment to see if the teachers can schedule and appointment for a follow-up conversation in person or over the phone. Tuesdays are designated for parents to visit their children teachers and check upon their children’s progress between

the hours of 2:30-3:15pm. However you have to call to let them know that you will be coming up to the school to speak to them. Demonstrate a willingness to work with the teacher on stated goals. This can help promote a positive relationship and create success for your child!
