Anime Club Mr. Chan and Mrs. Angeles Anime is based on Japanese manga (comic books). We will watch movies and shows, discuss cosplay, and learn about Japanese culture. Club members will talk and analyze past and present episodes and the various ways to express feelings and thoughts, which would otherwise be ignored. Club members will also learn the Japanese language by interpreting the words used in anime and scenarios where the language is used. Thursdays 2:30-3:30 pm
Band Club Mr. Grieco Band Club will allow current Band students the opportunity to practice on their respective band instruments and learn new music. It will also be an excellent opportunity for new students to learn how to play a wind, brass, or percussion instrument. Wednesdays 2:30-3:30 pm
BEST BUDDIES CLUB Ms. Chryssides This club is for kids who have a sibling with special needs, such as autism. In this club we will help make the world a better place by creating an awareness for kids with special needs. We will also explore ways to help others. Thursdays 7-8 am
Board games and Homework Ms. Ward Need some help with homework? Or maybe you want to try your strategic skills playing fun games, like Monopoly or Clue, among other great games! If so, then “Board Games and Homework” Club is the place for you! Thursdays 2:30-3:30 pm
Broadway Book Club at I.S. 5 Ms. Morrison The Broadway Book Club at I.S. 5 focuses on the various ways that books and literature have shaped the American Musical Theatre world, and how reading source materials may be a great way to connect even further to the play being performed. We will focus on the changes that the authors made between the source materials (books) and the shows. In addition, books or articles will be read on a monthly basis (and on monthly topics) and then connected to a play or musical’s performance. The capstone to this club will be attendance to a matinee showing of the musical “Aladdin” in June 2017. Wednesdays 2:30-3:30 pm
Builders Club Ms. Zaron and Mr. Howard In Builders Club, students will take on leadership roles within our community of Elmhurst, as well as within our I.S. 5 community. These roles will involve the interaction of students with their peers, teachers, and community members in order to make our world and community a better place. Friday 7-8 am
Bulldogs Bakery Ms. Levan Do you love to bake? Are you interested in learning more about the world of sweets and baking? Want to share your cultures recipes? Come & join Ms. Levan at the Bulldogs Bakery! Thursdays 2:30-3:30 pm
Cheerleading Ms. Escalante & Ms. Mayhew Ginas Cheerleading is a great way to spread school spirit and be part of a team. I.S. 5 cheerleaders cheer at the boys basketball games and special school events. Wednesdays 2:30-3:30 pm
Chess Club Ms. Goldberg Come play the game that has been proven to actually make you smarter! This club will be for beginners through advanced players, with weekly instruction from the New York City Chess in the Schools curriculum. You will become a better player, and have a great time while exercising your brain. We will also be linking up with chess club players from the 51st Ave. Academy for monthly tournaments, and there will be opportunities throughout the year to represent I.S. 5 at official Chess in the Schools tournaments citywide. Wednesdays 2:30-3:30 pm
Chess Club- Advanced Players Ms. Goldberg This club will be for players who would like to become more serious about the game, and are interested in entering official chess tournaments. Any chess player is welcome to join both the Wednesday and the Thursday clubs, to get extra practice. “Advanced” players should already be familiar with rules and basic strategies, and eager to gain more skills. Chess notation, which is important for tournament play, will be taught and regularly practiced. As with the Wednesday chess club, we will have monthly opportunities to compete against players from the 51st Ave. Academy, as practice for entry into official Chess in the Schools citywide tournaments. College Bound Ms. Levan Are you interested in your future? Do you know what is important on the road to college? Come hang out and explore the Road to College! Learn about the college application process, scholarships, and the financial aid process. Is community service necessary in high school to get into college? Come find out! We will be visiting a minimum of 1 College Campus! Start paving your road to success with Ms. Levan! Wednesdays 7-8 am
Crafts Club Ms. Cummings & Ms. Brandsetter Crafts club will be creating arts and crafts that will be used to enhance our school’s physical environment and showcase our school as a leader in me school. Wednesdays 2:30-3:30 pm
Create a Card Ms. Agueda Furman & Ms. Kelly Hello IS 5 students! Interested in learning card making skills? Well, join the Create A Card Club! This is not your typical construction paper and crayon cards. Here you will learn a variety of techniques to create beautiful greeting cards for all occasions! Wednesdays 2:30-3:30 pm
Dance – Jazz and Hip Hop Mrs. Waller Take those ear buds out and come listen to music with your friends, while learning today’s dance moves! If you find your feet moving or your head bopping whenever you hear music, then the jazz and hip hop club is for you. You’ll get to develop your skills while working collectively with your peers to choreograph to the music you love. Dance is not only enjoyable, but also a great way to get in shape. Start the day off energized, while meeting new people and making friends. Thursdays 7-8 am
Dance – Lyrical and Theater Mrs. Waller Do you find yourself singing and dancing whenever you hear music? Did you watch High School Musical and find yourself wanting to be a character in the movie? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions, then the Lyrical and Theater Club is for you! Come join us for an hour full of fun, while developing your dance skills and learning how to be a star! You will get to choose the multiple genres of dance we will explore, making this club all about you. Start the day off energized, while meeting new people and making friends! Tuesdays 7-8 am
Debate Team Ms. Malone and Ms. Angeles In the debate team, you will learn how to develop and argue an idea. We will debate with each other, and our school teams will compete against other schools. Wednesdays 2:30-3:30 pm

Humane Education/Animal Rights Club Ms. Brooks The Humane Education/ Animal Rights club is a forum where like-minded animal lovers and those who care about living in a cruelty free world come together once a week to discuss various issues on animal rights, animal care, and issues that impact the conservation of the earth we live in. We will have guest speakers, trips, and participate in activities to help animals, and bring our message to the rest of IS 5. Thursdays 2:30-3:30 pm
Leaders Yoga Club Ms. Costa Ribeiro Strengthen your body and mind by joining our Leaders Yoga Club! Let’s work out and relax together to develop strength, flexibility, balance, and concentration. Learn the habits that will help you become a better Leader in our community! Wednesdays 2:30-3:30 pm
Minecraft Club Mrs. Toto Students learn how to use strategies to survive, build their community, and acquire tools. Learning how to play Minecraft teaches students creativity, how to problem solve, and rely on their teammates. More advanced Minecraft players will be able to share with their fellow classmates how to overcome an obstacle. Thursdays 7-8 am
Mosaic/Art Club Ms. Choi In this club you will be making mosaics collaboratively, and throughout the year you will also make artistic decisions in decorating significant school events such as the school Prom. Thursdays 2:30-3:30 pm
Sci-Fi publication Mr. McCarthy This club will publish a literary journal filled with fiction, fan fiction and artwork leaning toward the science fiction/fantasy genre. Wednesdays 2:30-3:30 pm

Soccer Club Ms. Cummings, Mr. Matula, Ms. Scmoll Soccer club is to improve soccer skills by playing pick-up games of soccer. Friday 2:30-3:30
Spanish Club Ms. DiGraci The Spanish club serves to promote the cultures of the Hispanic world through an array of activities such as games, videos, holiday celebrations and more. Come and enjoy a fun atmosphere. Thursdays 7-8 am
Stock Market Game/Financial Literacy Club Ms. Kenny-Kelly Students will learn how to play The Stock Market Game and how to become Financially Literate Citizens. Wednesdays 7-8 am
Videography Mrs. Toto Students will be engaged in a photography/videography club, where they will take photographs and create movies on various topics of interest. We will learn how to edit photographs using various apps and design programs. The students will use Windows Movie Maker and iMovie to create movies and learn how to use the tools to create their film. Tuesdays 7:00-8:00
Yearbook Club Ms. Grossman & Ms. Roubanis Students will be responsible for taking pictures during the school day and at after school events. In addition, students will work with the online yearbook program to design the cover and pages of our 8th grade yearbook. Friday 7:00 – 8:00 am
